Here is a little history and information on Bad Axe MI
Bad Axe is the county seat for Huron County Michigan. Many people around the state or folks who are just learning about Bad Axe often ask where the name came from. We did some research and found out for you.
There were two major trails that met in the area that is now Bad Axe back when everything was still mainly wooded and full of wilderness. The year of naming is estimated to be created around 1865 when a camp site at the meeting of the two major trails was named Bad Axe Camp by Captain Rudolph Papst who was a surveyor. The name came from an old rusted axe left at the campsite by local hunters.
The original camp axe, or what is believed to be the original camp axe, is embedded in a section of tree that is on display at the Bad Axe Library.
